How many days do you need?
The short answer: the more, the better. But if your time is limited, here are options for every situation. With 5 days you can see Istanbul and Cappadocia. With 7–10 days you can add Pamukkale and Ephesus. And with 12–15 days you’ll discover the Türkiye that most visitors never see.
Istanbul only: Sultanahmet (Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern), a Bosphorus cruise, the Grand Bazaar, the Balat neighbourhood and the Asian side. Enough to fall in love with the city.
Istanbul + Cappadocia: 3 days in Istanbul and 2 in Cappadocia: valleys, underground cities, cave hotels and the chance of a hot-air balloon flight. The most popular combination, and for good reason.
Istanbul + Cappadocia + Pamukkale/Ephesus: you add the white travertine terraces of Pamukkale and the impressive Greco-Roman city of Ephesus. A very full week.
The grand tour: all of the above plus the Turquoise Coast (Fethiye, Ölüdeniz), Antalya, Konya (home of the whirling dervishes) and Troy. This is my favourite itinerary for anyone who wants to see the country’s real diversity.
Off the beaten track: extend your trip to the Black Sea (Trabzon, Sumela), the south-east (Mardin, Şanlıurfa, Göbekli Tepe) or Türkiye’s Aegean islands. Few visitors make it this far — and it’s spectacular.
