Only have five days in Türkiye? Don't worry: with good planning you can see the country's two unmissable destinations, Istanbul and Cappadocia, and still come away with a real feel for the place.

A slower version: three days in Istanbul, two in Cappadocia
Five days is the minimum I recommend for a first taste of Türkiye. This variation also combines Istanbul with Cappadocia, the country's two must-see destinations, but gives Istanbul an extra day.
Day 1 — Arrival in Istanbul and Sultanahmet
After landing at Istanbul Airport, transfer to your hotel in the Sultanahmet area. In the afternoon, an introductory walk around the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Camii) and a first look at the historic district. Dinner at a local restaurant with a view of Hagia Sophia lit up at night.
Day 2 — Historic Istanbul
A full day for the great monuments: Hagia Sophia (a Byzantine basilica from 537, later converted into a mosque), Topkapı Palace (home of the sultans for 400 years, with its Harem and the Sacred Relics), the Basilica Cistern (with its 336 columns rising from the water) and the Grand Bazaar for your first go at Turkish-style haggling.
Day 3 — The Bosphorus and neighbourhoods with character
A morning cruise on the Bosphorus, past Ottoman palaces, fortresses and yalıs (wooden mansions on the water's edge). In the afternoon, the Balat and Fener neighbourhoods (colourful streets, Orthodox churches, synagogues) or a crossing to the Asian side to discover Kadıköy and its fish market.
Day 4 — Fly to Cappadocia
Morning flight to Kayseri or Nevşehir (1 h 15 min). Visit Monks Valley (Paşabağ) with its three-headed fairy chimneys, the Göreme Open-Air Museum (rock-cut churches with Byzantine frescoes from the 10th–12th centuries) and Kaymaklı Underground City. Overnight in a cave hotel in Göreme with valley views.
Day 5 — Balloon and return
An early start for the hot-air balloon flight over Cappadocia's valleys at sunrise (optional; booking ahead is essential). After landing, visit a pottery workshop in Avanos and walk through Pigeon Valley with views of Uçhisar Castle. Afternoon flight back to Istanbul.
Rough budget for 5 days with a private guide
A 5-day trip to Türkiye with a private English-speaking guide costs roughly €1,200–2,000 per person (excluding international flights), depending on the hotel category and the activities you choose. That covers accommodation, domestic transport, the guide, the main entrance tickets and some lunches. The balloon flight is extra, at around €200–350 per person (at the time of writing, 2026).
