About Fethiye
Fethiye is the gateway to the Turquoise Coast, one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in the Mediterranean. The blue lagoon of Ölüdeniz, its turquoise waters sheltered by pine-covered mountains, is one of the most photographed beaches in the world and the landing point for the famous paragliding flights from Mount Babadağ, at 1,969 metres.
But Fethiye is much more than idyllic beaches. The Lycian tombs carved directly into the cliffs above the town, with the Tomb of Amyntas as the masterpiece, are a reminder that Lycian civilisation flourished here 2,500 years ago. Butterfly Valley, reachable only by sea, is home to one of the last colonies of the Jersey tiger moth.
The Fethiye 12 Islands cruise aboard a wooden gulet is one of the most popular sailing experiences in Türkiye: a full day among hidden coves, crystal-clear water and sunken ruins, with stops for swimming, snorkelling and lunch on board.

Ölüdeniz (Blue Lagoon)
One of the most famous beaches in the world: a lagoon of incredibly calm turquoise water, protected as a nature park. The lagoon beach (paid entry) has shallow water of an unreal colour. This is where the paragliders land gently on the sand.

One of the best places in the world for tandem paragliding. You take off from Mount Babadağ at 1,969 metres and glide for 25–40 minutes over the Ölüdeniz lagoon. No experience is needed: the pilot controls everything. The view is absolutely spectacular.
Lycian Tombs of Amyntas
Rock tombs from the 4th century BC carved into the cliffs overlooking the town. The Tomb of Amyntas, with its Ionic temple façade, is the most impressive. At sunset, the golden light on the tombs with the sea behind creates a memorable scene.

An idyllic cove reachable only by boat, enclosed by 350-metre cliffs. It is home to a colony of Jersey tiger moths (especially June–September). There's a small waterfall at the end of the valley and a hippie-bohemian atmosphere.

A day trip by wooden gulet around the islands and coves of Fethiye Bay. It includes stops for swimming in crystal-clear water, snorkelling over sunken ruins and lunch on board. You visit Flat Island, Cleopatra's Bay and several unspoilt coves.

Food in Fethiye
Fethiye's food brings together the best of the Turkish Mediterranean: ultra-fresh fish and seafood, meze made with local olive oil and garden vegetables. The Fethiye fish market is an experience in itself: you choose your fish at the stalls and take it to one of the surrounding restaurants, which grill it for you.
Don't miss stuffed mussels (midye dolma), salads with grilled hellim cheese, and home-made gözleme in the inland villages. The region's pine honey is exceptional. For dessert, mastic ice cream (damla sakızlı dondurma) is a local speciality.
Practical Tips
- The Ölüdeniz lagoon has an entrance fee (it's a nature park): it's worth it for the difference in water quality compared with the public beach.
- Book paragliding with certified companies and compare prices. The flight includes a GoPro video.
- Butterfly Valley is at its best in June–September, when the butterflies are active.
- Fethiye's weekly market (Tuesdays) is huge: fruit, spices, textiles and crafts. A good place for souvenirs.
- If you want somewhere quieter than Ölüdeniz, the beaches of Kabak and Gemiler are less crowded alternatives.
Getting There
The nearest airport is Dalaman (DLM), 45 minutes from Fethiye, with daily flights from Istanbul and international charter flights in summer. There are shuttle services (Havaş) from the airport to Fethiye.
There are also direct buses from Antalya (3 hours by car) and Pamukkale (3.5 hours). The coastal road from Antalya via Kaş is spectacular but winding.
