Seeing Cappadocia in 2 days takes some planning, but with a good itinerary it’s perfectly possible to enjoy its highlights. Here’s the ideal plan, day by day.
Day 1: Balloons, Göreme and northern Cappadocia
- 05:00 — Hot-air balloon flight: the headline experience of Cappadocia. A one-hour flight over the fairy chimneys as the sun rises. Book well ahead (flights sell out weeks in advance).
- 09:00 — Göreme Open-Air Museum: rock-cut churches with Byzantine frescoes from the 10th–12th centuries. The Dark Church is the best preserved.
- 11:30 — Paşabağ (Monks Valley): the most photogenic fairy chimneys, with their stone caps.
- 13:00 — Lunch in Avanos: a town famous for its pottery. You can try your hand at a pottery workshop.
- 15:00 — Devrent (Imagination Valley): rock formations shaped like animals (look out for the camel).
- 17:00 — Uçhisar Castle: the highest point in Cappadocia. Sunset with 360° views over the valley.
Day 2: Underground cities and the south
- 09:00 — Derinkuyu Underground City: eight levels dug into the rock, where as many as 20,000 people once lived. It’s the deepest and most impressive of them all.
- 11:30 — Ihlara Valley: a 14 km green canyon with a river and churches carved into the rock. A 4 km walk (the prettiest stretch runs from Ihlara village towards Belisırma).
- 13:30 — Lunch in Belisırma: riverside restaurants inside the canyon. Fresh grilled trout.
- 15:00 — Selime Monastery: the largest rock-cut religious complex in Cappadocia, with an impressive cathedral carved into the cliff.
- 17:30 — Back to Göreme: last night in a cave hotel.
Practical tips
- Balloon: book 2–3 weeks ahead. Price: roughly €150–350 per person at the time of writing (2026), depending on the season and the company. Flights are cancelled when it’s windy, so leave a spare day if you can.
- Footwear: bring comfortable trainers for walking in the valleys.

Cappadocia in 2 days: an alternative plan
Two days is the minimum to discover the magic of Cappadocia. Three or four days would be ideal, but with 48 well-planned hours you can see the most iconic landscapes and experiences of this unique region.
Day 1 — Valleys, rock-cut churches and an underground city
Morning at the Göreme Open-Air Museum: a group of Byzantine churches and monasteries carved into the rock between the 10th and 12th centuries, with remarkably well-preserved frescoes. The Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise) stands out for its vivid colours.
Continue to Monks Valley (Paşabağ), where the fairy chimneys take on impossible shapes with two or three heads. Then an underground city, Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu — labyrinths dug deep below ground, where whole communities lived for centuries to shelter from invaders.
In the afternoon, visit a pottery workshop in Avanos and enjoy a spectacular sunset from Uçhisar Castle (the highest point in Cappadocia).
Day 2 — Sunrise balloon and hidden valleys
An early start at 04:30 for the hot-air balloon flight at sunrise (flights run for most of the year, weather permitting; book weeks in advance). An hour drifting over the valleys among dozens of colourful balloons — probably the most photographed experience in the whole of Türkiye.
After landing and a Turkish breakfast at your cave hotel, explore Love Valley (with its famously phallic fairy chimneys) and Pigeon Valley, with stunning views and dovecotes carved into the rock. Lunch at a cave restaurant with pottery kebab (testi kebabı), the local dish that is cooked in a clay pot and served by breaking it open.

- Accommodation: book a cave hotel in Göreme, Ürgüp or Uçhisar. Sleeping in volcanic rock is a unique experience.
