Welcome to Istanbul — Private Transfer and a First Stroll

Arrival

You land in Istanbul and we meet you at the arrivals exit with a sign bearing your name. Private transfer to the hotel, about 50 minutes from the airport, with no waiting and no stops. At reception we hand you your travel documents and the assistance phone number, and we go through the plan for the coming days together. The rest of the day is free to get your first taste of the city at your own pace; if you arrive early, a first tea overlooking the Bosphorus is a must. Overnight in Istanbul.

The Bosphorus by Private Yacht — Spice Bazaar, Üsküdar and Beylerbeyi

We board a yacht all to ourselves and sail the Bosphorus for two hours — the strait that separates Europe from Asia and is barely 700 metres wide at its narrowest point: waterfront palaces, fortresses and the wooden mansions on both shores. Back on land, we step into the Spice Bazaar, built in 1664 next to the New Mosque. In the afternoon we cross to the Asian side: a stroll around Üsküdar and a visit to Beylerbeyi Palace, the sultans' white-marble summer residence, completed in 1865. Lunch included. Overnight in Istanbul.

Imperial Istanbul — Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque and Basilica Cistern

We start at the ancient Hippodrome, the Roman circus on Sultanahmet Square where the Egyptian Obelisk of Theodosius still stands. A few steps away is the Blue Mosque, with its six minarets and more than 20,000 İznik tiles. We cross the square to Hagia Sophia, the 6th-century Byzantine masterpiece whose 55-metre dome changed the history of architecture. We finish underground, in the Basilica Cistern: 336 columns and the two Medusa heads. Lunch included between visits. Overnight in Istanbul.

The Asian Shore — Çamlıca, Its Great Mosque and Kuzguncuk

We devote the day to Asian Istanbul. We go up Çamlıca Hill, the city's highest viewpoint, with both continents and the Bosphorus at your feet, and visit Çamlıca Mosque, the largest in Türkiye, opened in 2019 with room for 63,000 worshippers. Then we head down to Kuzguncuk, an old Bosphorus village where a mosque, a church and a synagogue share the same street: colourful wooden houses, community gardens and neighbourhood cafés. Lunch included. Overnight in Istanbul.

From Pierre Loti to Galata — Taksim, İstiklal and the Tower

We start the day above the Golden Horn: we go up Pierre Loti Hill, to the café from which the French writer used to gaze at the city, with one of the most serene views in Istanbul. We continue to Taksim Square and walk down İstiklal Avenue, a mile-long pedestrian street with its century-old red tram. We stop at the Pera Palace, the 1892 hotel built for Orient Express travellers, and finish by climbing the 14th-century Galata Tower: 67 metres high, with a 360-degree panorama. Lunch included. Overnight in Istanbul.

Palaces and Bazaars — Topkapı with the Harem and the Grand Bazaar

A day for two giants. In the morning, Topkapı Palace, home of the Ottoman sultans for almost four centuries: courtyards, pavilions, the Treasury and the Harem, which is included — the part that truly tells the story of palace life. In the afternoon we get lost, methodically, in the Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world, with some 4,000 shops spread over more than 60 streets. Time for unhurried shopping, with your guide close by to help you haggle. Lunch included. Overnight in Istanbul.

Balat and Fener — Colourful Houses and the Patriarchate

The last full day, and the most relaxed: Balat and Fener, the old Greek and Jewish neighbourhoods on the Golden Horn. We walk among colourful houses and painted stairways, step into the Church of St George, seat of the Ecumenical Orthodox Patriarchate, and see the Bulgarian Church of St Stephen, built entirely of cast iron in 1898. The rest of the afternoon is yours: charming cafés, antique shops and workshops, with no clock to watch. Lunch included. Overnight in Istanbul.

Important notes

General

Entry requirements

Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your return date. Visa rules depend on your nationality: some passport holders can visit visa-free for short tourist stays, while others need an e-Visa, which takes a few minutes to get at www.evisa.gov.tr. Check the requirements for your nationality before you fly.

Istanbul's weather

Istanbul has four real seasons: summers of 28–30 °C, winters that can bring snow, and a Bosphorus breeze that keeps the boat trip cool even in July. From November to March a waterproof layer is a good idea; the yacht cruise sails anyway unless there is a storm, in which case it is moved to another day at no cost.

Activities

Private pace and weekly closures

The car and the guide are just for you, so the order of the days adapts to your pace and to the calendar: Topkapı Palace is closed on Tuesdays, the Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays and visits to Hagia Sophia are interrupted at midday on Fridays for prayers. When we confirm your dates we check all this and, if necessary, swap days around without dropping any visit. The programme can be shortened to 5 or 6 days while keeping the essentials. Beylerbeyi Palace is closed on Mondays: if day 2 falls on a Monday, we swap the days.

Mosques and footwear

You enter mosques barefoot, with shoulders and knees covered; women need a headscarf, which is usually lent at the door. Istanbul is a city of hills and cobblestones: wear comfortable, closed shoes — no thin-soled sandals.

Do I need to speak Turkish for this trip?

No. Your guide, Sinan, speaks fluent English and is with you throughout the trip. He takes care of all the arrangements, translations, bookings and negotiations for you.

Can I customise Istanbul in Depth 8 Days?

Yes. Istanbul in Depth 8 Days is a private tour, so this 8-day itinerary is flexible: you can change stops, add extra days, swap hotels or adjust the pace of the trip. Message me with your preferences and we'll design your tailor-made trip, with no extra charge for the planning.

When is the best time to visit Istanbul?

Türkiye can be visited all year round. Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) bring pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer is ideal for the coast, and winter has its own charm in Cappadocia, with snow-covered landscapes.

Why can't I see a price on this page?

Because this is a private tour and its price depends on your dates, how many of you are travelling, the hotel category and the visits you want to include. I'd rather work it out by hand and send you a real quote, with everything itemised, than show you a "from" price that ends up looking nothing like what you pay. Request it with the quote form on this page and you'll have it within 24 hours.

How do booking and payment work?

Once you request a quote, you receive a private link with the final price and the full itinerary, with no obligation. To confirm, you pay a 30% deposit. The balance is paid 31 days before departure, by bank transfer or card (+3% surcharge). If you cancel more than 90 days before departure, only the handling fee and any penalties charged for flights and services already issued are retained; closer to departure, the cancellation policy scale applies, the same one you'll see in your quote.
