Arsuz
A fishing village on the eastern Mediterranean: boats, citrus groves and tables by the sea.
About Arsuz
Arsuz is the Rhosus of antiquity: a fishing village south of İskenderun where the Mediterranean still sets the rhythm of the day. The boats go out before dawn, the fish is auctioned on the quay, and the citrus and pomegranate groves reach almost down to the beach.
There are no great monuments here: there's village life, a stretch of clean coastline with Mount Musa behind it, and some of the most honest tables in southern Türkiye. It's the perfect stop to slow down on a route through Hatay.
What to See in Arsuz
Fishing harbour
Wooden boats, nets spread out to dry and the fish auction at dawn: the heart of the village for centuries.
Courtyard houses and old streets
The old village keeps single-storey stone houses with vine-shaded courtyards, a legacy of Greco-Roman Rhosus.
A family's table
The experience people remember most: dinner in the home of a local family, with Hatay dishes cooked just as they are at home.
Must-See Places
Food in Arsuz
Chargrilled fish from the gulf, Hatay meze, citrus fruit from the grove and tandır bread. In a family home you taste the home-cooked version of Hatay's UNESCO-recognised cuisine: oruk, hummus with meat and seasonal vegetables.
Practical Tips
- The village is flat and easy to explore on foot: comfortable shoes and not much else.
- The family dinner must be booked in advance; mention any allergies or dietary restrictions when you confirm.
- July and August are hot and humid: spring and autumn are better.
Getting There
Arsuz is 35 km from İskenderun and an hour and a half from Hatay Airport (HTY), which has direct flights from Istanbul.
