Türkiye is a long way from New Zealand, but for many Kiwis it is a familiar name: Gallipoli is part of New Zealand's story, and plenty of travellers combine the Anzac sites with Istanbul, Cappadocia and the Aegean coast. This guide covers what you need to travel to Türkiye from New Zealand: entry rules, flights, money and practical details.
Do New Zealanders need a visa for Türkiye?
No. Citizens of New Zealand can currently visit Türkiye without a visa for tourism, for up to 90 days (generally within any 180-day period). There is nothing to apply for beforehand.
- Passport: valid for at least 150 days from the day you arrive (in practice, many travellers aim for six months to be safe).
- Also needed: a return or onward ticket, and proof of accommodation (a hotel booking, although it is rarely requested).

Flights from New Zealand to Türkiye
There are no non-stop flights between New Zealand and Türkiye. The usual routes from Auckland connect through a hub:
- Via Dubai: Emirates, non-stop from Auckland to Dubai, then on to Istanbul.
- Via Doha: Qatar Airways to Doha (on some schedules with a stop in Australia), then on to Istanbul.
- Via Singapore: Singapore Airlines or Air New Zealand to Singapore, then a connecting flight to Istanbul.
From Christchurch you can also fly direct to Singapore; from other New Zealand airports you usually connect in Auckland or Australia. The whole journey takes around 24 to 30 hours, depending on the connection, and a night in Dubai, Doha or Singapore makes it much easier. Schedules change by season, so confirm them for your dates.
Time difference and jet lag
Türkiye is on GMT+3 all year round and does not change its clocks. It is 10 hours behind New Zealand during New Zealand daylight time (late September to early April) and 9 hours behind the rest of the year. When it is 18:00 in Auckland in July, it is 09:00 in Istanbul. With a gap this big, keep your first day light, get some daylight and go to bed at a local hour.
Best time to go
The seasons are the reverse of New Zealand's. The best months are April–May (mild, 15–25 °C, tulips in Istanbul) and September–October (warm days, fewer visitors, better prices). July and August are very hot inland but ideal for the coast; winter is quiet and cheaper, often with snow in Cappadocia. My month-by-month guide goes into detail.
Gallipoli and Anzac Day
For many New Zealanders, the Gallipoli peninsula is the heart of the trip: Anzac Cove, where Australian and New Zealand troops landed on 25 April 1915, and the New Zealand memorial at Chunuk Bair. It is usually visited from Çanakkale and combines well with Troy. A guide makes a real difference here: without the context, the fields and cemeteries can all look the same. Every 25 April thousands of Australians and New Zealanders attend the Dawn Service. Budget and money
Türkiye offers very good value compared with Western Europe. As a rough guide at the time of writing (2026), a mid-range trip costs around €80–130 per person per day, or €40–60 on a tight budget. The big monuments are the exception: Hagia Sophia is around €30 and Topkapı Palace with the Harem around €49. See how much a trip to Türkiye costs.
The currency is the Turkish lira (TRY). New Zealand dollars are not easy to change in Türkiye, so bring euros or US dollars for cash, or withdraw lira from the ATMs of the big banks. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted; if a card machine or ATM offers to charge you in New Zealand dollars, choose lira. More in my guide to money in Türkiye.
Practical tips
- Plugs: Türkiye uses European two-pin sockets (types C and F) at 230 V, the same voltage as New Zealand, so you only need an adapter.
- Health: no vaccinations are compulsory; routine vaccines and hepatitis A are usually recommended. Ask your doctor before you go.
- Travel insurance: as a tourist you normally use private hospitals and pay up front; SafeTravel recommends a comprehensive policy that includes medical evacuation by air.

- Tipping: more common than at home, around 5–10% in restaurants if service is not included; round up taxi fares.
How long to stay
