A hot-air balloon flight over Cappadocia is Türkiye’s signature experience and, without exaggeration, one of the most memorable things you can do on any trip. Every morning at sunrise, weather permitting, up to 150 colourful balloons rise at the same time over the Göreme Valley and a surreal landscape of fairy chimneys, valleys and rock formations in Cappadocia.
Balloon flight prices in 2026
At the time of writing (2026), prices depend mainly on the size of the basket and the length of the flight:
- Standard flight (large basket, 20–28 people, about 1 hour): €180–250 per person
- Comfort flight (16–20 people): €250–320 per person
- Premium or deluxe flight (8–12 people, 60–90 minutes): €250–400 per person
- Exclusive flight (small basket, with champagne): €350–500 per person
- Private flight (a basket just for your group of 1–4 people): from €1,500 for the whole basket
The price usually includes hotel pick-up, a light breakfast before take-off, the flight itself, a celebratory toast when you land (champagne or fruit juice, depending on the company) and a flight certificate.
When should you book?
In high season (April–June and September–October), book at least 2–3 weeks ahead: flights fill up quickly. In winter there is less demand and flights are cheaper.
The best balloon companies
The most reputable operators include Royal Balloon, Butterfly Balloons, Voyager Balloons, Turkiye Balloons and Kapadokya Balloons. Always choose a company with an official licence and experienced pilots. The cheapest offers usually mean bigger baskets (a less enjoyable flight) or less experienced pilots.
What the flight is like
You’re picked up from your hotel between about 04:30 and 05:30, depending on the season. After a light breakfast, you watch the crew get the balloon ready, then take off just as the sun starts to rise. The flight lasts about an hour, drifting at 300–500 metres over valleys, fairy chimneys, orchards and cave villages. Once you’ve landed, it’s time for the toast and your flight certificate.
What happens if the flight is cancelled?
Balloon flights depend on the weather. Every morning before dawn, Türkiye’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation decides whether the balloons may take off, and flights are cancelled for wind or fog: safety comes first. If yours is cancelled, you have two options: move to the following morning (if there’s space) or get a full refund.
That’s why I recommend keeping at least two mornings in Cappadocia free for the flight, so you have a second chance if the first is called off.
Practical tips
- Best time of year: April to November. July to September has the fewest cancellations.
- Clothing: dress in layers. Even in summer it’s cold at that hour and altitude, although the sun warms things up quickly. In spring and autumn bring a jacket, a hat and gloves.
- Camera: make sure your battery is fully charged and your memory card has plenty of space. The sunrise shots with dozens of balloons are spectacular.
- Fear of heights: surprisingly, most people who are nervous of heights cope perfectly well, because the basket doesn’t sway and the climb is gradual. The flight isn’t suitable, though, for anyone with severe vertigo or limited mobility, as you have to climb into the basket.
