A hot-air balloon flight in Cappadocia is one of the most iconic experiences in the world. Watching the sun rise over a sea of colourful balloons drifting between fairy chimneys and ancient valleys is something you never forget.
What is the experience like?
- 04:30–05:00: Pick-up from your hotel. It’s still dark.
- 05:30: Arrival at the launch site. You watch the crews inflate the balloons with gas burners.
- 06:00: Take-off at sunrise. The balloon climbs slowly to 300–600 metres.
- 06:00–07:00: A one-hour flight over the Göreme, Paşabağ, Love and Pigeon valleys. The pilot manoeuvres close to the fairy chimneys.
- 07:00: A gentle landing, followed by a celebratory toast and a flight certificate.
- 07:30: Back at your hotel in time for a full Turkish breakfast.
Balloon flight prices
At the time of writing (2026), expect roughly:
- Standard flight (16–20 people): €150–200 per person.
- Premium flight (8–12 people): €200–280 per person.
- Private flight (2–4 people): €300–500 per person.
Prices vary with the season: higher in summer and on public holidays.
When can you fly?
Flights take off at sunrise, 365 days a year, weather permitting. They are cancelled for strong wind, rain or fog. Roughly how often they fly:
- Spring/autumn: balloons fly on 85–90% of days.
- Summer: 90–95%.
- Winter: 50–70% (but snowy Cappadocia seen from a balloon is spectacular).
Key tip: if you can, stay at least two nights in Cappadocia. That way, if your flight is cancelled on the first morning, you get a second chance.
Which company should you choose?
There are more than 25 balloon companies in Cappadocia. Among the most recommended for safety and pilot experience are Royal Balloon, Butterfly Balloons, Voyager Balloons and Turkiye Balloons. Your guide can arrange the booking with the most reliable operator.
Practical tips
- Book ahead: at least 2–3 weeks in advance in high season. The best balloons sell out fast.
- Clothing: wrap up warm (it’s cold at 600 m, even in summer) and wear comfortable trainers (the launch fields are dusty).
- Camera: bring a fully charged battery. This is the photo shoot of a lifetime.
- Fear of heights: the basket is stable and the movement very gentle. Most people who are afraid of heights enjoy it without any problem.
