Istanbul at night is a different city. As the sun goes down, the mosques light up, the Bosphorus reflects the lights of two continents and the city takes on an energy that few places in the world can match. The options range from stylish rooftop bars to the old rakı taverns where locals linger over meze until late. This is where I'd spend an evening.
The best rooftop bars in Istanbul
Istanbul is built on hills, and a rooftop is the best way to see it lit up. These are the ones I recommend:
- Mikla (Tepebaşı, Beyoğlu): contemporary Turkish cooking on the top floors of a hotel, with a 360° view over the historic peninsula. For me, the best rooftop restaurant in the city.
- 16 Roof (Beşiktaş): Bosphorus views from a hotel rooftop, premium cocktails and a sophisticated atmosphere.
- Leb-i Derya: tucked away just off İstiklal Avenue, a terrace looking out over the Golden Horn. Good value for money.
- 360 Istanbul (İstiklal Avenue): cocktails and a sweeping view from the top of a historic building on the avenue.
- Galata: the streets around the Galata Tower have hotel roof terraces where you can have a drink with the old city spread out in front of you and Sultanahmet lit up on the other side of the Golden Horn. Perfect for photos.
Rooftop venues open, close and change hands, and some only open in the warmer months, so check before you go. If you want a table for sunset, book ahead.
Dinner by the Bosphorus
The fish restaurants of Arnavutköy, Bebek, Ortaköy and Kuruçeşme serve memorable dinners right on the water, facing the illuminated strait. Watching the ferries and cargo ships slip under the bridges is hypnotic. Up the hill at Ulus, Sunset Grill & Bar has one of the most spectacular sunset views in the city.
In the middle of the Bosphorus, off Üsküdar, the Maiden's Tower lights up at dusk. It reopened to visitors in 2023 after a long restoration, but my favourite way to enjoy it costs nothing: from the Salacak waterfront, with a glass of tea, as the sun sets behind Hagia Sophia. A night cruise on the Bosphorus
For a more intimate alternative to the daytime cruise, take to the water after dark: some boats include dinner and live music. My guide to Bosphorus cruises compares the options.
Meyhane: an evening of meze and rakı
This is the most authentic night out in Istanbul, and the essence of Türkiye: you sit down in a meyhane (tavern) in Beyoğlu or Beşiktaş, order meze after meze to share and let the evening take its course. You toast with rakı, the aniseed spirit Turks call "lion's milk", and in many places there's live Turkish music (fasıl). Nevizade Sokak and the streets around it in Beyoğlu have the best meyhanes. Istanbul lit up
- Sultanahmet by night: walking between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque after dark, both spectacularly illuminated, is a magical experience, and a free one.
- Galata Tower at sunset: go up before it gets dark to watch day turn into night over the city, one of the most photographed moments in Istanbul. Everything you need for the visit is in my article on the Galata Tower.
Bars, clubs and live music
Beyoğlu, around İstiklal Avenue and Taksim, is the liveliest area for bars and clubs (see my guide to İstiklal Street and Taksim Square). Kadıköy, on the Asian side, has a more alternative scene, with craft beer bars and live music: here's my guide to Kadıköy. And Bomontiada, a cultural complex in a converted old brewery, brings together restaurants, bars and events.

Tips for a night out in Istanbul
Istanbul is safe at night in the tourist areas: Beyoğlu (İstiklal and Taksim), Karaköy, Kadıköy and Sultanahmet are all fine to walk around. As in any big city, stay away from empty streets and from bars whose touts approach you on the street. The metro and tram run until around midnight (at the time of writing, 2026); after that, taxis are reasonably priced, but make sure the meter is running. My safety guide to Türkiye has more advice.
