Türkiye is a wonderful destination for family travel. Turks adore children — in restaurants they'll be treated like royalty — and there's something for every age: hot-air balloons in Cappadocia, beaches on the Turquoise Coast, medieval fortresses and countless experiences that turn the trip into a real adventure for younger travellers.
The best places in Türkiye for kids
Istanbul
The city fascinates children and adults alike. Unmissable: the Basilica Cistern (it looks like a film villain's hideout), Topkapı Palace (tales of sultans and treasure), boat trips on the Bosphorus and the Rahmi M. Koç Museum, an interactive museum of science and industry.
Cappadocia
Watching the hot-air balloons at sunrise will leave them open-mouthed. Add underground cities such as Derinkuyu, horse rides among the fairy chimneys and pottery workshops where they can make their own piece.
The Turquoise Coast (Antalya, Fethiye, Ölüdeniz)
Sandy beaches, clear water and all-inclusive resorts geared to families. The Antalya Aquarium is one of the largest in the world.
Pamukkale
Children love walking barefoot across the white travertine terraces and splashing in the natural thermal pools. It's like playing on another planet.
Practical tips for families
- Safety: Türkiye is a very safe country for families, and Turks are extremely welcoming to children.
- Food: lahmacun, pide and kebabs are a guaranteed hit with kids (the adventurous ones might even try kokoreç). Turkish cuisine is varied, with something for every taste.
- Pace: don't try to see too much. On a private tour we can adapt timings and stops to your children's rhythm.
- Car seats: child seats are available on private tours on request.
Suggested 7-day family itinerary
Days 1–3: Istanbul (the main sights, a Bosphorus cruise, the Balat neighbourhood). Days 4–5: Cappadocia (balloons, an underground city, a pottery workshop). Days 6–7: Pamukkale and Ephesus. Or, if you'd rather have beach time, fly to Antalya and relax on the coast.
I design tailor-made family itineraries with activities suited to your children's ages.
Türkiye with Kids: A Practical Guide
Türkiye is an excellent destination for families. Turks adore children — in restaurants, in the street, everywhere you'll be met with attention and affection. And the country offers activities that fascinate young and old alike.
The Best Activities for Children
- Cappadocia's underground cities: exploring Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu feels like stepping into an adventure film. The tunnels, the hidden rooms and the story of how families lived underground fascinate children.
- Balloons in Cappadocia: children from 6 years old can usually fly (check the operator's minimum age). The flight is gentle and safe — no turbulence and no sense of vertigo.
- Bosphorus cruise: the public ferries are an adventure in themselves. Kids love watching the ships, the seagulls and the fortresses from the deck.
- Pamukkale: walking barefoot through warm water on the white travertine terraces. A natural water park they'll love.
- Interactive museums: Istanbul's Miniaturk has 135 scale models (1:25) of monuments from across Türkiye — perfect for children aged 4 to 10.
- Beaches: Ölüdeniz, Patara and the beaches around Antalya are safe, with shallow water and fine sand.
Practical Tips for Families
- Getting around: domestic flights are inexpensive and save hours on the road. On most airlines, infants under 2 travel almost free on a parent's lap and children aged 2–12 get a discount.
- Food: children usually love Turkish food: pide (Turkish pizza), ayran (a salted yoghurt drink), simit and, of course, Turkish ice cream with its famous show.
- Pace: if you're travelling with young children, I recommend trimming a standard itinerary by about 30% so they don't get worn out. Better to see less and enjoy more.
- Safety: Türkiye is a very safe country for families. Healthcare is good and affordable. Bring travel insurance, just in case.
